Summer 09′ Pick: Summer Wars

summer-09-pick-summer-wars

Well, springtime sure came pretty fast ain’t it? The likes of cow-cash animes such as K-On are rocketing up to fan hype once again, as usual for Kyoto Ani stuffs. They’ll do whatever it takes to drain every single drop of money out from their production, even outright lying? Anyhow let’s just put aside that sad little studio for I have another promising theatrical anime to introduce.

Guys, meet Summer Wars. Same studio (Kadokawa) as the one who did Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time).

null

Judging by its promo vid, this is a sweet looking production. Very fluid and smooth movements, likable characters and detailed backgrounds as well. For those who watched Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo before, Kadokawa’s productions are indeed theatrical-class quality. I’m looking forward to it.

Anyhow I’ll leave the judging to you guys. Do check out the PV below.

Spring 09′ Pick: Saki

So FINALLY GONZO did learned something from their recent crisis eh? At first glance, this new production of theirs looks a lot more Japanese market oriented, with several promising characters abound to bring the burning fire of moeru out of anime otakus, will they recover this time!?

Image taken from anidb.net

The promotional poster depicts crisp lines, brilliantly outlined cel-shading and such, obviously a mark of GONZO’s forte but hold on, what really caught my attention to this would be the voice actors.

Fukuyu Jun (Lelouch), Koshimizu Ami (Horo from Wolf & Spice), Ueda Kana (Tohsaka Rin in F/SN, Yumi in Marimite), Rie Kugimiya (Taiga in Toradora and all other tsunderes ever) and Itou Shizuka (Rei in Marimite). qwewqrqgomfg so many tsundere chara voice actors! I’m getting moeru spasms just by reading their names alone!!

Though I don’t really know much on it’s storyline, aside from the obvious mahjong influence; with such brilliant cast in hand (Rie Kugimiya alone would also be more than enough of a factor for me to watch lol), coupled by the fact that it’s being handled by GONZO, this would be one of my personal pick for the first half of the year. Definitely an interesting  title to look forward to.

Neko Shiki Comparison

Once again, netizens rejoice in bliss as ufotable showers viewers in Episode 5 of KnK with wholesome moeful obliteration. Moemoe murderess Ryougi Shiki didn’t just utilize her feline prowess in battle; she shows off her moe killer moves on the bed as well. Streams of torrential nosebleeds ensues.

Don’t worry there are no spoilers here.

How can it be possible for someone to be so inhumanely moe till it drives viewers into letting out a deranged mouth-frothing bestial roar?

This fine image depicts Shiki’s striking characteristic resemblance to that of a cat’s.

Gonzo shakes off 100 employees

gonzo-shakes-off-100-employees

Looks like Gonzo is in the red already, with numerous back-to-back titles failing make a breakthrough sales in their local market, it is really a no-wonder. All of their animes since Vandread have been very geared towards the western market. Gonzo, of course being their stupid self never paid much attention to the demands of their home ground. They went on doing what they do best; anime for western market.

Of course, after all the poor sales it’s a wonder to how did Gonzo actually survived all these years? One can only assume GDH injecting funds from sister companies like Rosso to keep Gonzo staying afloat. Perhaps overall sales and licensing profits managed to keep them just enough to break even? One way or another, GDH couldn’t stand the loss anymore and have decided to retrench Gonzo’s original manpower of 130 to just 30 in the course of next 5 years. This, of course coupled by their previous claims of reducing anime production annually from 8 to 4 means they are really in a deep shit. Not to mention them making deals with Youtube and Crunchyroll to broadcast new productions with ready subtitles. Probably a way to hamper fansubs and increase overseas sales.

Perhaps Strike Witches is Gonzo’s last saving grace, and they know that very well. The TV version alone are blatantly littered with every possible fetish for the local masses to feed upon. Stuffs like pantyshots to striped panties and school swimsuits are a common sight throughout the anime. Of course who wouldn’t like an anime where innocent girls shamelessly display their glorious bottoms in the open? Not me lol, I totally and wholly approve of this production. :D

It seems that the second season of Strike Witches have been announced. This means that the first was a pretty decent success; enough to warrant itself a continuation. Of course Gonzo is putting everything on the line for the success of this anime. I hope so too, it’s a shame to see a great studio falling flat on it’s face.

ss_wagaya_no_oinari-sama_-_24

Finally after months of waiting, I have downloaded the remaining episodes from a batch torrent by SS. Of course Oinari-sama yet brings in an abundance of moe fanservice which is enough to melt the heart of those otaku throng out there. Just be warned that spoilers are aplenty. Scroll away if you do not wish to poison your eyes!

Anyhow, episode 24 starts off with Noboru and Tooru doing spring cleaning of their house. Of course Kou and Kuu are pulled into this as well. Their jobs are then segregated by Noboru with Kuu handling the hallway and the house entrance. Gyokuyou of course perceived this as Kuu being ordered around by Noboru to do menial tasks instead, which then moves in to seal Noboru and Tooru away with his Dema. Naturally, Kuu finds out it’s Gyokuyou’s doing and a squabble ensues.

After a few more eventful scenes, let’s fast forward to the next chapter where they had a hatsumode at Mubyou’s shrine, where viewers are showered with an all-star appearance to mark the ending of the anime.

Kou does her usual moe expressive dance with vigorous zeal.

While Sakura appears in a green kimono, bleh.

Miyabe appears in a glorious red kimono with faux-fur, whatever it’s called.

Of course even Mubyou shows up in her own shrine. MOE ARGH

And with grand appearance of Kuu and Kou in grandiose purple and pink kimono *nosebleed*

Gyokuyou appears in her super hiked up hakama!

Of course Oinari doesn’t stop there. Just when you think thousands of otaku have been slaughtered by this episode, the newly directed ending continues the onslaught. Many more died.

And FINALLY just when you think the ending roll is more than enough, Oinari delivers a final blow with Gyokuyou looking flustered in a bright orange kimono *dies*

MOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

ARGH THIS IS TOO MUCH. GYOKUYOU-SAMA MOEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

In the end, it was Gyokuyou who took the spot light. Her flustered look shall be engraved into my mind for as long as I live.
